Due to work and personal commitments, it’s often hard to take time out to attend university. However, with the advent of online learning and the new technologies it relies on, studying an MBA in a digital space has become commonplace – particularly as professionals across the globe continue to work, maintain and improve their careers.
One student taking advantage of the online degree is Luxury Transport Managing Director, Jane Mutamangira, who studies from her home country, Zimbabwe.
Jane is one of a growing number of females enrolled on to our Online MBA and explains that the ability to combine work and study is giving women like herself the freedom to hone business skills and level the playing field.
“I decided to study online mainly because of its flexibility - especially since I have small children,” she explains. “Women are multi-tasking beings, so it is great for us to be able to engage in study programmes that allow us to carry out other commitments too.”
“I chose to study at the University of Birmingham because of how internationally-recognised their degrees are. The Online MBA attracts a global audience and incorporates a broad range of students from different professional backgrounds,” she added.
Having worked in several sectors during her fifteen-year career (including construction, IT and transport), Jane decided to apply to study for our Online MBA in order to reach the next rung on her career ladder.
“I see the Online MBA as helping me to better carry out my managerial obligations,” she says. “I also hope to be able to impart my knowledge onto my team.”

Jane is far from alone in turning to online learning to help her fulfil her career goals and regularly connects with fellow students via live synchronous sessions and discussion forums.
Just like her peers, Jane accesses the Online MBA at a time and place that suits her, which would be unlikely to be available locally.
Her online degree is already paying dividends; she has been able to improve several working processes and practices thanks to what the course has taught her.
“I have learned a lot from the modules I’ve studied so far,” she explains. “I have a new way of dealing with my employees using the knowledge I’ve obtained from from certain modules and have been applying new concepts across the business.”
Once she has gained her MBA, Jane plans to break through the glass ceiling that had previously held her back from fulfilling her career potential - she urges others to do the same:
“The future for women in business is bright. Now that we’re able to study and work at the same time, we’ll soon be able to get more powerful positions in a business world which is traditionally dominated by men. My advice to women is that now the sky is the limit. Go and study all you can because the world out there is waiting for you!”
